Do herons and egrets belong in the same or different groups?

Image
Top:  White-faced heron, Little blue heron, Green heron Bottom:  Reddish egret, Black-crowned night heron, Yellow-crowned night heron, Great blue heron The three species of heron I have seen in Canada are the green heron, black-crowned night heron, and great blue heron.  The white-faced heron I photographed in New Zealand, and the other three were taken in southern Texas near the Gulf of (Ahem) Mexico.  And, if you didn't notice, there is an egret in the group. The body shape of herons and egrets appears to be the same, which isn't a coincidence.  Egrets are really just a type of heron.  They both belong to the Ardeidea.  The term egret typically applies to white heron-like birds or heron-like birds with a glossy coat.  Below are photos of some egrets. Snowy egret, Great egret, Cattle egret The only North-American member of the Ardeidea that I haven't seen or photographed is the tri-coloured heron.  Cattle egrets are an old-world species foun...

Harjit Bahia - Science teacher and colleague from Garibaldi died August 2, 2024

Image
You will be missed Mr. Bahia.  You made a difference and we are sad you are gone. I keep in loose contact with my fellow retired teachers from Garibaldi Secondary School.  I talked with my long-time friend, Mike Lynch, today, and discovered that Hargit died over the summer.  Unbeknownst to him, he had an underlying heart condition and passed away after working out on his treadmill.  The date was August 2, 2024. I was shocked to hear this.  He was only 49 years old, turning 50 some 3 months later.  It was a shock to everyone, for he was loved by all who knew him.  As a teacher, Mr. Bahia was kind and fun.  He contributed to students in many ways and was always available to help those in need.   For myself, I knew him as a fellow science teacher and taught in the adjoining room to him.  He was always available to help, share ideas, and work together.  Easy to approach, I found that I could talk to him about anything and appreciat...

ACE - Adverse Childhood Experiences - and you.

Image
It turns out there is a strong correlation between the number of ACEs you have had and how well you are doing as an adult.  What is this ACE thing anyway, and how does it influence me as an adult? The term adverse is important to understand if we are to grasp exactly what ACEs are.  The Cambridge dictionary defines it as "having a negative or harmful effect on something."  The concept of ACE then relates to the traumatic experiences young people have had.  The number of these experiences has a direct relationship with the well-being of adults.  The trend is that the more ACEs one experiences, the poorer they manage as adults. What exactly counts as an ACE?  This is where things broaden out somewhat, but the general idea is that they can be significant individual events (sexual abuse) or long-term issues (verbal abuse) that play a key role in the person's behaviour and mental well-being as adults.   The ACE questionnaire for adults out of Californi...
