Is it OK to buy used, older model cameras?

Four of my favourite camera bodies I have owned over time.

This is a great time to buy a used DSLR camera.  Many camera companies are either replacing their DSLR cameras with mirrorless ones or augmenting their existing lineup with them.  People are selling their older DSLRs off in favour of newer mirrorless cameras, and in the process selling off their lenses too.  That's because mirrorless cameras have a larger bayonet mount than their cousins; you can mount older lenses, but only with an adapter.

Consequently, you can pick up used bodies and lenses at reasonable prices.  There is also a larger volume of them available than there would normally be.  So you have got both selection and price working for you.  You don't want to just buy anything though, as you can get someone's problem.  If you don't know enough about cameras, bring a knowledgeable friend with you when you buy.  Consider some of these suggestions:

  • Buy from a reputable dealer or seller - some retailers sell used equipment while those on eBay, Craigslist, and Marketplace will have reviews.
  • Ask what the shutter count is on camera bodies. Most mid-range cameras have life expectancies in the 150,000 to 200,000 cycle range. I look for lightly used equipment, preferably with less than 20,000 actuations.
  • If you are buying from a person rather than a store, meet in a public place, have a friend go with you, deal in cash only, and be sure to give the unit a thorough check.
  • Don't buy the first thing that comes to mind.  Review it (online go dpreview.com) and look for other similar cameras that may be the solution you are looking for.
  • Buy something more than just the minimum as you will no doubt grow in your prowess and want better features in the near future.
  • If you are uncertain about making a purchase due to trust issues, do a search online for how to buy used equipment and how to be sure you are not being scammed.
I occasionally sell my used equipment.  As of this date I have one body (D7100) and three lenses (20mm, 85mm, and 50mm) for sale.  Over the years I have bought and sold dozens of lenses and many camera bodies.  Most of the time I have been happy with my purchase.  I have, however, been ripped off a few times.  Meet in person, use cash, and research the item or person.

Have fun with your new stuff.
