Happy Birthday Dave! BTW ... Who is Dave?

There are many words I would use to describe Dave, but the top ones would be honest, giving, kind, and family-orientated.  He is a Christian, not one that associates with that term loosely, but rather one who is truly committed to its deepest meaning.  He is knowledgeable about many things and is constantly increasing his knowledge base through his reading and program watching.  And, if that weren't all enough for a human being to be, he also plays cards (and wins - he beats me regularly).

It has been my good fortune to have known Dave for over 35 years now.  During that time, I have watched him face many challenges that Life has thrown at him.  It has never been easy for him and he has faced each one with both faith and determination.  I know the pain each event has caused him and have done my best to support him during those trying times.  That's because we're friends - good friends.

Likewise, Dave has been there for me when tough times have called.  And, as I have told him, he is one of three non-family members that I would trust with my life.  Today is his birthday, and I want to wish him a very happy one.  

A very happy birthday to you, my friend.  Enjoy the time with your family.  And don't eat too much cake.

You will be missed Mr. Bahia.  You made a difference and we are sad you are gone. I keep in loose contact with my fellow retired teachers from Garibaldi Secondary School.  I talked with my long-time friend, Mike Lynch, today, and discovered that Hargit died over the summer.  Unbeknownst to him, he had an underlying heart condition and passed away after working out on his treadmill.  The date was August 2, 2024. Munson pond - before and after road development

Left - Google maps view of Munson Pond as of May 15, 2025 Right - Future view of Munson Pond from Google maps Munson Pond is a jewel of Kelowna.  Even though it used to be an open gravel pit, it is now home to countless birds and mammals and a haven for humans needing peace, a breath of fresh air, and a touch of nature.  Western Pond turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act.  Their population is such that people lose count when trying to ascertain their number.   With the proposed road development, Munson Pond will lose valuable ecologically important land, will suffer from an increase in urban traffic, and will likely be affected by nearby housing developments that are sure to come.  All of this development will put more pressure on the inhabitants and result in a decrease in both biodiversity and population.   A further injury to the pond will be an increase in eutrophication due to nearby residential and commercial development....

Mountain Bluebird - out of the blue.

Mountain Bluebird photographed near Princeton, BC. While camping at a resort near Princeton, BC, I had a chance to visit a wildlife refuge that was nearby.  There are about 5 km of trails there and it took me two days to cover them all.  That may sound like an unreasonably slow rate of progression, but I took several hundred images during my time there and did a fair amount of step retracing.  The end result was the opportunity to get some great hiking in and see three bird species I have never encountered before. On the first day, I saw and photographed a pygmy nuthatch.  I have seen the white-breasted and red-breasted varieties but never this species.  The second day caught me completely off guard, as within the span of 30 seconds I saw the other two, a Bullock's oriole and a mountain bluebird.  It was a stunning discovery, for me anyway, and I can still feel the thrill of the moment thinking back on it.  Many of you may think this a bit odd, t...
